Connecting Gee and Jordan

  1. The first theorem states that you are either are part of a discourse or you aren’t.  This is controversial because it seems like there should be an in between of some sort. The second theorem states that a primary discourse is very basic in the sense that it needs additional discourses to become powerful.

  1. Gee explains “Mushfake” as, “make do”. Meta-knowledge is being aware of what you know, and resistance is sticking with what you’ve got.  In other words to be successful you have to work with your own knowledge against that of others.

  1. The students in Jordan’s class use the process of writing in Black English to learn mushfake, meta-knowledge, and resistance.  It is Black English itself that is a perfect example of Gee’s combination for successful students and social change. Jordan describes the qualities of Black English as, “the presence of life, voice, and clarity”.  These three qualities support Gee’s combination almost perfectly, mushfake is clarity, meta-knowledge is the presence of life, and voice is resistance. By associating the three qualities of Black English with Gee’s combination, you can see how Gee’s claim that it’s, “a good combination for successful students and successful social change”.

Understanding: Why swearing in Black English is unrealistic.

Exploring relationships: Text to Gee’s text.

Understanding: Why there is a need for guidelines.

Challenging: Is this the point?
