Literacy Narrative Sketch 3

AP Litera-Sure to Be Awful

Admittedly, reading books is often not pleasurable for me.  I am unable to take interest in books that cover things unknown to me, or are of a different time period.  For some reason any and all fascination gets lost in the black and white text. Why I decided to take an AP literature class beats me.  On the first day of class we received a long list of books we would be reading over the year. The list included readings such as Dante’s Inferno, The Handmaid’s Tale, Frankenstein, Oedipus Rex, A Streetcar Named Desire, Slaughterhouse-Five, and many more.  After reviewing the syllabus, Ms Landers then informed the class that she has a masters degree in Shakespeare.  That was the day I met my exact opposite. The following day I went right over to the guidance office to drop the class.

I was very disturbed to find that I could not drop AP Literature.  How was I supposed to read all of that literature? Today, I’d consider myself a survivor, and to my surprise I passed.  Some of the reading assignments were just as awful as I expected, and in those instances the internet was a good friend of mine.  However, others were not so bad. I actually read, understood, and enjoyed some of them! I’ve come to the conclusion that my former determination of my relationship with so called “boring books”, was completely inaccurate.  The contents of the literature I read doesn’t affect my interest so much as the individual literature itself. I will encounter books I don’t like, and then books I love. To find those books I have to pick them up and open them.
