Angela Davis Talk

When I sat down for Angela Davis’s talk I expected it to cover Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and racism.  While she did touch on both, she connected them to modern issues as well, resulting in a multitude of issues.  The first issue was the treatment of Black transgender women. That’s three minority groups combined, and while I was aware that the combination existed I never really thought about what that must be like.  Being such a specific group must introduce a number of hurdles on its own, such as how to fight for this group. Is it better to fight for the specific group, or all three underlying groups at the same time, or is that the same thing?  Broadening minority groups even further, she said that “Black Lives Matter” should really be “All Lives Matter”. By looking at this movement, it appears that working towards a much larger goal is the better choice. Clearly working at a goal that is inclusive to subgroups will have greatest achievements, but will it be harder or easier to fight for all minority groups at the same time compared to just one? In the end, Angela Davis stands for the wellbeing of everyone, and she has dedicated her life to making it happen.  Her talk covered many issues, all of which she gave equal importance, which seems to be be the first step in the fight for all lives.
